COVID-19 Message from ELTOC Board and Executive Director
April 23, 2020
Dear learners, tutors, and friends of ELTOC,
We hope that you, your family and friends are staying home, safe and healthy.
In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community (ELTOC), in consultation with the Board of Directors, has been taking all necessary measures aligned with the guidance provided by public health and government authorities to protect the health and safety of our learners, volunteers, staff and contractors.
While all in-person tutoring was stopped and our office was closed in March, our team is working diligently from home to share appropriate resources and methods with tutors so that they may continue to provide online tutoring to our learners, where feasible.
For the health and safety of our tutors and our learners, we are adamant that public health policies be followed. This includes no in-person visits and no drop off of any materials. These are new experiences for all of us, and with flexibility and innovation, we can do this together, remembering that we must fully comply with public health authorities’ protective measures to safeguard all.
We are grateful for the continued support of our funder, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada during these unsettling times. However, even when operating remotely, we continue to be faced with increases in some operating expenses and the need to raise supplemental funds. We have deferred our plans to organize our usual annual fundraising event until public health authorities and federal and provincial governments deem it is safe to hold such events. In the interim, we are working on creative means to promote awareness and increase donations.
We realize these times are stressful for many people, especially for our learners who are at a higher risk of having less access to information, services, and community news, and of feeling more isolated than before. We want to assure you that we will continue to be there for you and will look at alternate ways, including personal calls, online learning and social media to stay connected.
If you are a current ELTOC learner but have not heard from your tutor or Education Counsellor, please call 613-232-8566 or email admin @eltoc.ca to leave your name and phone number and we will be in touch with you as soon as we can.
We will continue to provide new information as it becomes available through our social channels on Facebook, LinkedIn and on our website at https://eltoc.ca/covid19-resources/
Tutors, please contact your learner(s) and let them know that this letter has been posted on our website. At the top right of the page, they can use the SELECT LANGUAGE option to have the information translated into another language.
Thank you all for your understanding and patience. One day this will be behind us. Until then, please stay safe.
Giselle Leduc, Executive Director and the ELTOC Board of Directors
